Draining your sprinkler system

1) Look for your sprinkler cutoff handle, which is usually a white PVC pipe with a red or blue handle in a hole in the ground near your water meter. Turn the red cut off handle so that it is perpendicular to the white pipe, not parallel. This will cut off the water from going from your meter to the sprinkler system.

2) Run any zone for a minute or so to clear out any water left in the lines. Turn your panel to "off."

3) Remove rubber caps from test cocks on backflow device. Turn each test cock 1/4 turn with a flat head screwdriver. Water should run out of the test cocks for only a couple minutes; if water continues to run, then the irrigation cutoff at the street is not fully closed. Leave the test cocks in this open position until spring.

In the spring, follow the above steps in reverse.
